The Prison and Probation Service is organised into a headquarters, six regional offices and a Transport Service.
Each region has remand prisons, prisons and probation units, which co-operate to help clients adjust in the best way possible to a life without crime.
Prison officers, inspectors, transport staff, nurses, kitchen staff, cleaning staff, office workers - in the Prison and Probation Service there are over 200 different job descriptions. However, the majority of our staff are prison officers.
Each prison officer acts as a contact person for designated prisoners. They help out with paper work and are involved in planning individual rehabilitation activies throughout the sentence.
